Our accreditations and membership of quality assurance schemes verifies our systems from procurement through to delivery of finished product and customer service. Specifically aspects of operation include purchasing, animal welfare, handling if identity preserved material, traceability, butchery to specification, packing and labelling, storage, plant hygiene, food safety, and training. We are fully compliant with current UK and EU legislation and this is verified by periodic Food Standards Agency inspections.

Accreditation

Since the year 2000 Solent Butchers Limited have held the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety. We also hold a number of other accreditations or certifications including the Soil Association and Red Tractor Meat Processing. A fundamental objective of our Quality System is continuous improvement and in line with this we are members of BRC Participate and operate a system of monitoring and keeping abreast of industry developments and trends. This enables us to focus on producing safe, legal products which meet customer specification.

HACCP

At Solent Butchers our food safety system is firmly rooted in the application of the principles of HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) as detailed in Codex Alimentarius. The proven advantages of application of a robust HACCP Plan include:

  • Focus on preventative measures throughout the food chain, rather than end product testing
  • Prompts preventative measures for on-line process control
  • Resources can be focused on high risk areas critical to assuring product safety
  • Assists in the production of safer products and focuses on continual improvement
  • All checks carried out are documented and recorded to ensure full quality assurance

Microbiological Testing and the Food Safety Program

Solent Butchers conduct routine daily swabbing of meat contact surfaces to confirm the effectiveness of cleaning controls. Microbiological and chemical analysis is carried out on meat and meat preparations to verify shelf-life and compositional requirements including meat and fat content. This is done by our contracted UKAS accredited laboratory. All tests carried out support our aim of achieving maximum levels of food safety and conformity for all key areas of our business.

Labelling

All our products are labelled in line with current food legislation including full traceability. Labels are continuously monitored to ensure full compliance at all times.

Traceability

We have a comprehensive system for supplier approval driven by the need to have established, reliable, consistent supplies of safe and legal raw materials of known provenance. For our identity preserved products we have from ‘farm to plate’ traceability. For all products we have a robust, tested traceability system which operates forwards to customers and then back to our raw material source. This is achieved through a new electronic stock control system which utilises barcode scanning as the means of identification.

Training

A comprehensive programme of staff training is in place to ensure that food safety is not compromised and the requirements of the British Retail Consortium Global Standard for Food safety and current food legislation are met.

Our Staff are our most important and valuable asset and we believe that by investing in staff training we will continue to complement our business and continually satisfy and exceed our customers’ expectations.

Audits

Within the company quality system, procedures are in place to accomodate regular daily documented checks and full weekly/monthly internal audits. Audits provide useful dialogue which result in immediate corrective action being taken when required. External audits are always welcome and encouraged.
